Ruling party lawmaker in Bangladesh, Golam Mowla Rony has blasted United States for "extra judicial killings" in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq as well as inhuman torture on people at Abu Gharib prison and Guantanamo Bay detention center. He also said, enforced disappearance and extra-judicial killings take place in United States at a much higher degree in comparing to that of Bangladesh. The statement of the ruling party's MP came at a time when the ruling party is awaiting Bangladesh visit of United States secretary of states, Hillary Clinton, which is scheduled to take place on May 5. Ruling Bangladesh Awami League is already interpreting the visit of the US secretary of states as a sign of the United States government's renewal of support towards it, though the ruling party and the ruling elites are facing massive public wrath following massive corruption, patronization of corrupts by the ruling elites, total failure in addressing the existing power crisis in the country as well as fearsome law and order situation where hundreds of people have already become victim of extra judicial killings and enforced disappearances. Political and diplomatic analysts are already expressing grave concern at the prevalent situation in Bangladesh and are suggesting that the Bangladesh visit of Hillary Clinton at this crucial situation may wrongly be interpreted as an attempt of the rulers in Washington and particularly President Barack Obama as giving legitimacy to the limitless notoriety and state-sponsored terror of the ruling party in Bangladesh.
Though Hillary Clinton's Bangladesh tour has already been included in her itinerary, which many believe is reasoned at Washington's desire in getting the TIFA Treaty signed, the policymakers in United States are now re-assessing the entire scenario in Bangladesh to judge if the trip of the secretary of the state would be logical at this stage. Seeking anonymity a diplomatic source in Dhaka said, "The visit plan of Hillary Clinton at this timing is the worst ever blunder of the US administration, as the ruling party in Bangladesh has already exposed its extreme repressive face to the people by continuing numerous forms of notoriety and state-sponsored terror."
It said, "The United States administration might not have been properly briefed about the ground realities in Bangladesh and the degree of huge notoriety on the people."
The source added, "Hillary Clinton definitely should postpone her Bangladesh tour at this junction and should rather give a strong message to rulers in Bangladesh in ensuring rule of law and stopping all forms of state-sponsored terror including secret killings and enforced disappearances."
It may be mentioned here that, political turmoil has already reached into its peak in Bangladesh following enforced disappearance of opposition leader and former Member of Parliament, M Ilias Ali, who was abducted by government agents along with his driver few days back. Main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party [BNP] has called for a nation-wide dawn-to-dusk general strike in the country on April 29 and 30.
