NEW DELHI: The Bhartiya Janta Party's (BJP) decision to not support the Congress party candidates for the upcoming presidential elections seems to have led to fissures within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). This may be politically advantageous for the Congress party.

Sources said that the BJP's most important ally, Janta Dal-United, was not going to support the saffron party's decision.

JD(U) leaders seemed upset with the "unilateral" decision taken by the BJP. "If they can decide unilaterally, we can do the same and not go with them," said a JD (U) leader. National president Sharad Yadav is expected to confirm the same in a media briefing later today.

BJP leader Sushma Swaraj had said on Monday that her party was not going to support any Congress candidate including Pranab Mukherjee and Hamid Ansari.

The presidential election will be held in July 2012. The President will be chosen, for a five years term, by an electoral college consisting of the elected members of both houses of Parliament, the elected members of the state legislative assemblies and the elected members of the legislative assemblies of the Union Territories of Delhi and Puducherry.
