Moudud terms cases baseless

BNP standing committee member Moudud Ahmed MP Monday termed false, baseless and politically motivated the cases filed against party’s front-row leaders, including Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.

“The government has filed the cases to divert people’s attention from the abduction of Ilyas Ali,” he said at a press briefing held at the BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office.

Moudud blasted the government for suing the opposition leaders and demanded immediate withdrawal of the cases. “It is not possible to stop the opposition’s movement by filing cases and meting out repression.”

The BNP leader alleged that Ilyas Ali was abducted to divert people’s attention from Suranjit Sengupta’s money scandal and the two cases were filed to divert people’s attention from the Ilyas issue.

“As the government has lost its popularity, they are committing crimes one after another,” the former law minister told the journalists, as many other front-row leaders, including the acting secretary-general, avoided public appearance in the wake of police crackdown after days of shutdown marked by outbreaks of violence.

The former law minister claimed that senior leaders of a big political party like BNP could not be involved in vandalism and setting fire to cars.

The BNP-led 18-party alliance will continue its movement until the government steps down, he said, adding that they will fight legally and occupy the streets to oust the “fascist” government from power.

Replying to a query as to where the party’s acting secretary- general was at the time, he said Fakhrul could not get in as police laid a siege to the BNP central office.

In reply to another query about fresh programmes, he said new programmes would be announced from a protest rally Wednesday.

Later in the day—before his arrest—Rizvi Ahmed at a press briefing at the central office announced demonstration programme for Wednesday against government actions and as next course of their movement.
