Pet Pals – India’s Funniest animals

Four doting pet-owners reveal how their rescued animals bring them joy and laughter everyday
Every hour on the hour, Sudha Seetharaman is treated to a stereo rendition of her ‘Ajanta' clock's music. Her black mongrel Gujji positions himself in front of the clock and sings along. The gorgeous pooch frequently goes off-key, but his enthusiasm garners him much praise. “He kept my late uncle company and helped see him through his stroke”, says Sudha. “He's been the reason for so much happiness in our life”.
For Devika Khazvini and her husband Hathef, their rescued cats are a source of constant comic relief. Devika refers to Bif, her tomcat and his reflexive need to mew in response to a person sneezing. “This habit of his tempts people and my son's friends used to do marathon sneezes. Bif would go on mewing in his sleep after each sneeze”, she says. She adds that her other cat Pokie also has eccentric sleep habits. “Pokie waits till Hathef is asleep and then creeps up beside him, arranges his hand by spreading out his fingers and holding them down with his paws, latches onto his finger and sucks on it till he falls asleep, purring”.
Dotings owners' joyful storiesBeenu Venugopal's cat Kurni makes his displeasure known when he is taken to the vet. “The doctor called him a rowdy since he was protesting aggressively when we took him for his shots”, says Beenu. “After we brought him home after the injection, we kept calling him ‘rowdy'. He got so annoyed that he gave us a stare, turned his back on us and let out a very different meow which clearly sounded like an insult to us”, she laughs.
On the subject of names, Anand Krishnan realised the downside of naming his companion animals after various alcoholic beverages (his pets are named Whiskey, Quarter, Cola, Vodka and Remy Martin). His indoor cat Whiskey chose the 2 of October to sneak out of his house and wander off. A frantic Anand was forced to pace the streets screaming- ‘Whiskey! Whiskey!'
“It was a dry day and people must've thought I was selling liquor in black”, he says sheepishly. Luckily, his embarrassment was short-lived. He found his mischievous cat safe, just a few minutes later.
